This might seem like an obvious question to answer but you’d be amazed how many people turn up to their massage inappropriately dressed! The bottom line is, it really doesn’t matter what you wear as you’re going to strip off to almost naked. They key is to be comfortable.
Your massage therapist will ask you to undress, while they leave the room. This gives you a few minutes of privacy to remove your clothes; you’ll hang them up or pile them on a chair. Then, you’ll climb onto the massage bed and cover yourself with a sheet or towel (hopefully, one of the two will be left on the bed for you).

State of Undress

Now, the next question is what state of undress should you be underneath that sheet? Well, that’s entirely your call! Some people prefer to leave their pants or knickers on while others prefer to completely strip off. When we asked massage therapy clinics how many people left their undies on, we were told it’s 50/50 so don’t feel embarrassed if you’d rather leave yours on. Don’t leave your bra on because your massage therapist will want to get to your back and the straps will get in the way. If you’re the modest type, leave your pants or knickers on but remember, your massage therapist is trained in keeping your private areas covered while manipulating you into position. If you want to know where your massage therapist will keep a towel draped, as a rule of thumb, it will be placed above your knees to just above your waist and the same applies to women when laying on their front, a towel will cover the breast area. Feel free to leave your socks on if you’re not expecting a foot massage, but if you want to remove them, do so.

Clothes On?

There are rare occasions when people ask to keep their clothes on. Now, this isn’t entirely normal but you can have a massage through clothes, so long as they’re not too thick. However, there’s no way you can expect your massage therapist to use essential oils – imagine the mess! At the end of the day, the patient needs to feel at ease, so if you’d rather leave your clothes on, then so be it. You won’t get all the benefits of skin-on-skin massage but you will get some level of relief.

Hair

Tie your hair back, if it’s long – otherwise it gets caught up in the massage and it might get extra greasy from all the lotions and essential oils. If you’re having a head massage, you might want to keep it down, but ask first.

After Massage

As far as what to wear post-massage, that’s up to you but it’s a good idea to slip something on that is comfortable, soft and unrestrictive. A track suit, joggers, leggings, hoodie and T-shirt will suffice but don’t think you can’t wear your jeans or put on a business suit – you can, it’s all about personal preference!
